Birdie fest incoming (we’ll get into that in just a second).

DraftKings Reignmakers and NFT fantasy sports are breaking my brain. I’ve played daily fantasy sports (DFS) for almost a decade now. I’m quite used to making a lineup, entering a contest(s) for a set dollar amount, and seeing what return I get at the end of the event. Simple, fun, easy.

With DK Reignmakers, the game is completely changed! Each week I’m torn by the voices inside my head saying “just sell off XYZ asset and recoup some investment” and “let it ride because XYZ can certainly make the cut, finish T20, T10, T5, WIN!” So, what the hell do we do here brain!?

We’ve completed 10 tournaments with $3,025,000 in prizes awarded (plus some additional gated contest prizing). We have 27 tournaments remaining with $6,925,000 worth of prizes to be won. Determining when to be a buyer and when to be a seller is a part of the game. I’m still a buyer in the market for this game in totality when the right deal is to be had, but this week I was a seller. I moved two ELITE pieces of my collection because it felt like it was time to trim down and focus on the rest of the schedule. The two assets that I listed (DJ Trahan and Martin Trainer) sold in less than 10 minutes. Clearly market equilibrium existed. I was happy to sell and someone else was happy to buy. This peer to peer exchange brings an incredible dynamic to DK Reignmakers. I bid my assets farewell, may you do the next person better than you did I (just kidding, please don’t make me have any RAGRETS).

Course Info

This week TPC Craig Ranch is on display. It will be the third year that the course has hosted a PGA TOUR event. KH Lee has won both of the first two events held here at -25 and -26 under par. A birdie fest indeed. A lengthy par 72 at ~7500 yards and another track where distance is the biggest protector of the golf course. Will pure length do its job? I wouldn’t bet on it as I fully expect to see TONS of birdies made this week. Superb iron play (particularly long irons) and a hot putter will be the recipe for low scores.

Golfer Targets

Its a VERY top heavy field this week, Scottie Scheffler vs. everyone else. If you’re fading Scottie (I don’t own any Scottie so I’ll be fading) then you’re simply hoping for something pedestrian from him. If he finishes outside the top 10 consider it a win.

As is always the case, I’ll highlight three golfers I like this week across the odds ranges: Best odds (+2000 or better), mid range (+2000-9000), and long shots (+10000 and up).

Best Odds: Tom Kim LOW ASK, CORE $13.50, RARE $54.80, ELITE $339.99

• All aboard the Tom Kim express this week with a prayer to the Gods that he can find his putter. TK is one of the best iron players in this field and while distance isn’t exactly his specialty, his iron play should be able to carry him this week. He ranks 9th on tour in Par 4 scoring average and you’ll need to make birdies on Par 4s this week to stay near the top of the leaderboard. Let’s roll the rock this week TK!

Mid Range: Tom Hoge LOW ASK, CORE $6.88, RARE $25, ELITE $190

• From playing at TCU and residing in Fort Worth, TX Tom Hoge has been quite the see-saw during the 2023 PGA TOUR season. The back and forth has been quite real with a T3 at the Players Championship where he broke the single round scoring record to missed cuts at Masters and the RBC Heritage. This week Hoge finds himself in a field where he can most certainly not only compete but win. His strong iron play stands out to me ranking 1st in Strokes Gained: Approach. I expect the crowd to be very pro-Hoge given the Texas narrative!

Long Shot: Matt Nesmith LOW ASK, CORE $1.30, RARE $7.25, ELITE $82.50

• Has Matt Nesmith found his game? He’s coming off of 3 better performances resulting in 3 made in a row in some strong fields (T59 at RBC, T4 at Zurich, T35 at Wells Fargo). He’s back to gaining strokes on Approach and it seems the ball striking is coming around. Also look at that price dispersion above from RARE to ELITE (interesting). Of note, Matt is in the field next week at the PGA Championship and while he’s a long shot, getting two weeks worth of utility is nice. As always, its a roll of the dice at +10000 and above, but I think Nesmith can definitely make the cut this week.
